How to Care for Your Exterior Paint Job in Central Oregon
If your home was recently painted, you might be wondering what comes next. In Central Oregon, it’s common for homes to collect dust, pollen, smoke residue, and even spider webs, so naturally, you may want to rinse things down every so often.
At Straight Edge Paint and Finish, we want your new paint to look great and last as long as possible. Here’s a simple guide to help you take care of your exterior paint, whether you’re in Bend, Redmond, Prineville, Sisters, or Powell Butte.
Let the Paint Cure First
Your new paint needs time to fully cure. That process takes about 30 days. During that time, avoid rinsing or scrubbing the siding (even if you notice dust or debris building up.)
After 30 days, the paint is fully hardened and you can rinse it if you choose to. Washing is completely optional but can help your home stay looking fresh, especially if you live in a high-dust or tree-heavy area.
Want to Rinse? Here’s How to Do It Safely
If you decide to wash your home after the first month, keep it simple and gentle:
Use a garden hose or soft brush
Stick to mild soap and water if needed
Avoid high-pressure washers and harsh chemicals
This kind of maintenance is helpful for removing dirt, pollen, and mildew, especially on shaded trim or lighter-colored paint.
Seasonal Cleaning is a Smart Habit
Many Central Oregon homeowners choose to rinse their homes once or twice a year—typically in spring and fall. It helps clear away what the weather leaves behind and keeps your siding looking clean between paint jobs.
Keep Sprinklers Aimed Away from Painted and Stained Surfaces
Regular water spray from sprinklers can wear down paint faster, especially on sunny or exposed sides of the house. Make sure sprinklers are adjusted to avoid constant contact with your siding, trim, deck or fence.
If We Stained Your Deck or Fence
Stained wood also needs care to stay protected. We recommend:
Sweeping off pine needles, leaves, and debris regularly
Planning to re-stain every 2 to 4 years, or as needed, depending on sun exposure
This helps prevent cracking and fading, and keeps your outdoor spaces looking their best.
Save Your Touch-Up Paint
We always leave extra paint behind for touch-ups. Keep it sealed and stored in a cool, dry place. If you ever need help using it or run out down the road, just reach out.
