Thinking about taking your home darker? Look at this Powell Butte repaint first.
We just wrapped a full exterior repaint on a barndominium in Powell Butte. The home was a classic farmhouse green before. Green metal roof, red window frames, olive green body. A beautiful combination, but a very specific look.
The owners were ready for something more modern, with more presence.
So we went dark.
Sherwin Williams Iron Ore on the body, the shake gables, the trim, and the fascia. The green metal roof stayed. The red window frames stayed. Same roof, same windows, totally different home.
Here’s the cool part about going from green to Iron Ore.
The green roof and red windows didn’t change at all. But against the new dark charcoal body, they look completely different than they used to.
Before, the green roof kind of blended into the green body. Now it stands out as its own thing.
Before, the red windows had to compete with all that green. Now they pop cleanly against the dark.
Same colors. Same materials. New context. That’s what a body color change actually does to a home.
A little more about Iron Ore
Iron Ore is dark, but it’s not black. It’s a deep charcoal with just enough warmth that it never feels cold or flat.
In full sun, it reads almost like a soft graphite. In shadow, it deepens into a richer, true charcoal. That kind of range matters out here, because we get a lot of strong, high-altitude sun. A color that shifts a little through the day keeps your home interesting at every hour instead of looking the same flat shade from sunup to sundown.
It also holds up well on barndominium and farmhouse styles. These homes have big vertical lines, wide planes of siding, and bold accents like garage doors, stone, and dormer windows. Dark body colors let all of that stand out. Light colors hide it.
What we did on the job
Full exterior repaint. Not a refresh, a real repaint.
Wade walked every inch of the home before any paint came out. Pressure wash, full dry time, scrape and sand the loose paint, spot prime, and caulk the joints that need caulking. The seams that are supposed to breathe, we leave alone.
Then two solid coats of Iron Ore on the body, shake gables, trim, fascia, base, and dormer cheeks. Everything in the same color so the home reads as one piece instead of a patchwork.
The result
This home went from a classic green farmhouse to a moody, modern barndominium. Same roof. Same windows. Same stonework. Different home.
